Showy Milkweed – Seed Packet
Milkweed is an essential host plant for the Monarch butterfly. Help create butterfly habitat by planting Milkweed!
ABOUT: Perennial native to the Western United States, 2-5′ tall, with clusters of stunning pink orb-like blooms in midsummer. Plants are very drought tolerant & thrive in disturbed sites. Note: spreads vigorously by rhizomes and can be difficult to remove, so take care when planting. If lacking proper garden space, you can help create Monarch habitat by sowing these seeds in abandoned lots, ditches, or the bottom of slopes (swales) where water collects in spring.
HOW TO GROW: A. Direct sow outside in fall or spring or B. in early spring, sow seeds into well-draining pots placed outside in the sun. Tamp seeds into the soil surface. Transplant when roots become fairly well established. Note: Exposing seeds to a period of cold is necessary to aid germination.
CAUTION: the white sap of the milkweed plant can be toxic in large amounts. Avoid skin/eye contact and do not ingest.
