Lovage – Seed Packet
ABOUT: Ancient perennial whose leaves were once laid in shoes to revive the weary traveler. Leaves have a strong celery taste and are used to flavor soups, stews, and casseroles. The hollow, round stems also make fun straws for Bloody Marys. In mid summer, yellow umbels attract bees and beneficial insects such as parasitic wasps, lacewings and others. Mature plants can get up to 6-8’ tall.
HOW TO GROW: Direct sow seeds in fall or spring (or start seed indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date). Seed depth: ¼” Final spacing: 2-3′ apart. Grows best in full sun.
FUN FACT: Queen Victoria was known to carry candied lovage seeds with her to satisfy her sweet tooth. Legend has it she even requested pockets sewn into her dresses to carry the seedy snack.
